작가 소개
1859년 영국 에든버러 태생. 어릴적부터 엄격한 스파르타식 교육을 받았음. 독서를 좋아해서 날마다 도서관에서 책을 빌려 읽었음. 카톨릭 교육을 받았고, 에든버러 대학의 의과대학 졸업. 이 대학 부속 병원의 외과 과장 조셉 벨 박사가 '명탐정 홈즈'의 모델이 됐다고 함. 1880년 고래잡이 배를 타고 북극해에 갔다옴. 대학 졸업후 선의가 되어 아프리카 서해안을 다녀옴. 의사 개업을 했으나 손님이 없어 책이나 읽고 있던 중 나도 한번 써보자 해서 글을 쓰기 시작. 다시 공부해서 박사학위까지 받았으나 여전히 한가해서 아예 소설가로 전업. 1886년 명탐정 홈즈 시리즈 시작. 탐정 소설로 유명해졌지만 본인은 역사 소설을 쓰고 싶어해서 다수의 작품을 썼고 과학 소설과 스포츠 소설도 썼음. 나이가 들자 신비주의 자가 되어 심령학 강연을 하고 다니다가 1930년 병으로 사망.
