필명: Charles Willis, E.G. O'Brien
1917년 영국 서머셋 마인헤드에서 출생 .런던의 킹스대학에서 물리학과 수학을 공부하여 우등으로 졸업하였다. 영국 행성간협회의 회장을 역임했고 왕립천문학외와 우주비행학회,H.G.웰스협회 등 많은 조직의 임원 또는 회원으로 있다. 탁월한 미래 소설가로 60여권의 저서를 갖고 있음 .그의 저서는 30여개국에 번역되어 3000만부 이상의 판매를 올림 .1961년 칼린거상 수상 .이후에도 웨스팅하우스 과학저술상과 SF계의 대표적인 상인 휴고상, 네뷸러상 등 을 수상. 통신위성을 발명한 1945년의 업적으로 1982년 국제 마르코니 협회와 프랭클린 학회의 금메달 수상. 또한, 최고의 과학소설 작가로 인정받는 그는 986년 미국 SF작가협회로 부터 그랜드 마스터라는 명예를 받는 등 숱한 상과 영예를 받는 등 숱한 상과 영예를 받았다. 최근에는 스리랑카대통령이 모라토와 대학의 총장으로 지명한 바 있다. 저서로는 <어린 시절의 끝>,<2001년:우주의 오디세이>, <2010:우주의 오디세이2>,<2061:오디세이3>,<그랜드 뱅크로부터 온 유령>이 있다.
