작가 소개

미국 공상과학소설가. 뉴욕 출생. 1952년 이후부터 《갤럭시》지(誌)를 중심으로 여러 잡지에 공상과학단편을 발표하여 유명작가가 되었다. 발표된 단편들을 모아 54년에 처음으로 《사람의 손이 아직 닿지 않는다》를 발표하였는데, 그의 작품의 흐름과 특징을 집약한 걸작모음으로 대표작이기도 하다. 외계인이 본 지구인의 우스운 관습과, 반대로 지구인이 본 외계인의 이상한 관습, 외계인과 지구인의 대결, 미래지구의 기괴한 생활양식 등을 제재로 한 신선한 아이디어와 의외의 결과가 그의 작품의 특징이다. F. 브라운과 함께 50년대 공상과학문학을 대표하였다. 《우주시민(1954)》 《지구순례(1957)》 등 6권의 단편집과, 선악의 가치가 전도되어 나쁜 짓을 하는 것이 출세의 지름길인 행성을 그린 《로봇문명(1960)》 《기적의 차원(1968)》 등의 장편이 있다.
