작가 소개

존 윈담은 초기, SF를 읽지 않은 독자들에게 처음으로 받아들여진 초기 SF작가 중 한명이다. 또한 1950년대 SF로 유명세를 탄 몇 안되는 영국 작가 중 한명이기도 하다. 윈담은 1931년부터 작품을 내기 시작하였으나, 그가 본격적으로 유명세를 타게 된 것은 세계 2차 대전 이후 그의 종말론적 세계관이 사람들의 공포를 자아내기 시작하면서이다. 걷은 식물 트리피드를 시작으로 윈담은 H.G.Wells가 떠난 자리를 메꾸었다. 하지만, 윈담이 단지 재앙의 모티프만을 따옴으로 인하여 웰즈를 이은 것은 아니다. 그는 그럴듯해 보이는 사회적 변화를 비판하기 위하여 종말의 날에 대해 정신적, 사회적인 부분까지 접근하였다. 그의 소설에서 나오는 주인공들은 종종 위부의 위험보다는 주변인들에 의해 혼란스러운 상황을 맞게 되는 경우가 많다. 윈담의 소설들은 매우 절망적이고 비관적인 미래관을 보여주고 있으며, 비슷한 내용과 구성의 연작들은 계속해서 히트를 쳤다. 이중 걷은 식물 트리피드 The Day of the Triffids(1951)과 The Kraken Wakes(1953), The Midwich Cockoos(1957)은 윈담의 소설 중 가장 상업적 성공을 하였으며, 이 중 The Kraken Wakes를 뺀 나머지는 영화화까지 되었다.

하지만 윈담의 종말론과 비관적인 미래관은 이후 60년대 중반의 행복함이 만연한 사회적 분위기와 부딪치고 말았다. 따라서, 그는, 사람들의 반대에 못이겨서, Chocky(1968)라는 해피 엔딩의 소설을 집필한다. 하지만, 이 소설의 경우 표면적으로 보면 해피 엔딩이지만 읽고 난 뒤 며칠 뒤 회상해보면 윈담이 지금까지 보여준 어느 소설보다 더 비관적인 미래관을 깨닫게 되는 수작이 되고 말았다.

윈담은 영국, Warwickshire의 Knowle에서 1903년 태어났으며, 1963년 Grace Wilson과 결혼했으며, 1969년 사망하였다.
