작가 소개

미국 공상과학소설(SF) 작가. 1930년대에 성행한 오락적 우주활극 작가로 H.해밀턴과 쌍벽을 이룬다. 외계에서 다가오는 지구에 대한 위협이라는 설정은 스페이스오페라(space op-era)에 공통된 것인데, 그는 그 위협의 대상을 인간 이외의 지능 높은 외계인이나 불가사의한 생물체를 소재로 하여 황당무계한 이야기가 되기 쉬운 스토리를 해박한 의사과학적(擬似科學的) 설명으로 교묘하게 처리하고 있다. 다원적 우주테마의 효시라고도 할 수 있는 《우주군단(1934)》 4부작과 《항시군단(航時軍團, 1938)》이 대표작이다. 제2차세계대전중 징집되어 한때 작가활동을 중단했으나, 대전 후 SF계에 복귀하여 인류와 로봇의 전쟁을 테마로 한 《휴머노이드(1949)》를 발표하였다. 단편집으로는 1920∼50년대에 걸친 작품을 수록한 《판도라 효과(效果)》가 있다.
