작가 소개

건즈백의 생애는 아메리카 신화의 일부이다. 1884년 룩셈브루크에서 태어난 그는 스무살때 미국으로 이민을 온다. 그가 처음으로 창간한 잡지 <모던 일렉트릭스>에 <랄프 124C41+>(1911)를 연재. 작가로서 기억되고 있지만, 그의 본업은 출판 편집인이었다. 1926년 그는 세계 최초의 SF잡지[Amazing stories]를 발행하며, 과학소설 (Science Fiction)이란 단어를 발명한다. 그에 있어 SF란 테크놀러지를 독자에게 가르켜 미래로 인도하는 교육의 수단이었다. 이런 생각은 훗날의 SF와는 차이를 보이지만 , 과학소설의 아버지로서의 업적을 기려 '휴고'상이라는 형태로 지금도 그를 높이고 있다.
