작가 소개

1925년에 미국 미주리 주에서 출생. 제 2차 세계 대전 때 입대하여 각처의 전투에 참가했다. 전쟁이 끝난 후 캘리포니아 주립 대학에서 영문학을 전공하고 졸업 후 플라스틱 제조 회사에 근무하며 합성 수지를 연구하였다. 소설을 쓰기 시작한 것은 1949년부터 였는데 그 작품은 초인 과학을 다루는 것이 많았다. 주로 단편을 즐겨 썼으며 약 50여 편 정도 발표했다. 그는 소설을 쓰면서도 회사에 계속 근무하고, 고분자 물질의 연구를 계속하며 수술에 사용할 플라스틱 재료를 발명하기도 했다. 그리고 합성 수지에 대한 전문 서적을 편찬하기도 했다. 1966년 회사를 퇴직하고 작가로서 활동하기 시작했는데 로스앤젤레스에서 흑인과 결혼하여 두 아이를 두고 행복한 가정을 이루고 있다. 네빌의 소설에는 현재의 과학보다 많이 진보된 초인 과학의 기술과 현재의 과학 지식으로서는 생각할 수 없는 초능력을 가진 우주인이 등장한다. 그러나, 그의 작품 속에서는 초능력을 가진 우주인이 설치는 것이 아니라, 초능력을 가진 우주인도 역시 인간과 별로 다를 것이 없다는 것을 강조하고 있다.
