로버트 A. 하인라인은 1907년 미국 몬태나에서 태어나 1988년에 사망했다. 가장 문학적이고 세련된 과학소설가로 알려져 있다. 그는 캘리포니아 대학에서 수학과 물리학 과정을 수료하고 1934년 해군을 전역한 이후 전업작가로 활동하였다. 1939년[어스타운딩]지에 [생명선]을 발표, SF 작가의 길로 들어서면서 미국 SF의 폭발적인 발전에 중추적인 역할을 담당하였다. 특히, 그는 아서C.클라크, 아이작 아시모프와 함께 SF문단의 '빅3'로 불리 고 있는데 클라크나 아이작 아시모프보다 문학성에 있어서 뛰어난 감각을 보여줌으로써 과학소설도 분명 문학의 테두리에 존재한다는 것을 증명해 주고 있다. 하인라인의 인기 비결은 풍부한 지식을 작품 안에 용해시키는 재주, 하인라인 나름대로 구상한 '미래역사'에 의거하여 자신의 작품을 일관되게 구성하는 능력에 있다. 뛰어난 SF를 통해 청소년들에게 독특한 통과의례를 차려주는 하인라인의 대표작으로는[시간의 블랙홀] [우주인 존스] [우주의 전사] [하늘의 터널] 등이 있다.

샌프란시스코 남쪽 산타 크루즈에 있는 그의 저택은 정원이 엄청나게 넓어 산책하는데만 한 시간이 걸린다고 한다. 그리고 그 저택의 내부에는 우주선의 사진들이 잔뜩 걸려 있다고 하며, 그 중에는 <우주 대전쟁>시리즈의 작가인 울러의 초상화도 있다고 한다. 그는 고양이를 무척 좋아하여 언제나 가까이 두고 있으며 집필 중에는 커피를 곁에 두고 작업에 임한다고 한다. 그는 SF작가들중에 이혼하지 않은 사람은 자신을 포함하여 2,3명밖에 없다고 말한다. 거의 대부분의 작가들이 몇 차례 이혼하고, 그결과 부인에게 위자료를 지불하기 위해 미친듯이 작업을 하는 다작의 작가가 많다는 등 재미있는 얘기를 곧잘 하기도 한다.
