작가 소개

<타잔>의 창조주로 더 유명한 버로우즈이지만, <바슘 시리즈>를 비롯한 많은 초기 SF 걸작을 쓴 SF작가이기도하다. 버로우즈의 작품은 공포와 신비가 어우러진 미지의 세계로 우리들을 안내한다. 거기에는 영웅들의 무훈(武勳)과 찬란한 로맨스가 기다리고 있다. 비평가들은 그의 문체는 조잡하고, 내용은 허무맹랑하다고 비웃지만, 수 많은 소년들이 <화성의 공주>와 <타잔>을 읽으며 상상의 나래를 펼치는 사실을 부정할 수는 없을 것이다. 그의 작품속에서 꿈은 이루어지고, 영웅은 사랑을 얻는다.


에드가 라이스 버로우즈는 1875년 9월 1일, 아메리카 시카고에서, 구 남군의 소위였던 공장경영자의 아버지의 4형제의 막내로 태어났다. 군인기질의 엄격한 아버지의 명으로 직업군인의 길을 지망하지만, 군인양성학교를 중도에 퇴학, 웨스트 포인트 육군사관학교 입학에도 실패하고 포기한다. 이때 걸린 류마티스의 발작이 원인으로 버로우즈는 생애에 걸쳐 심장병을 짊어지게 된다.
그후, 아버지가 경영하는 건전지 제조공장의 사무원, 기병대원, 회계사 등의 직업을 전전한다. 1900년 25살에 10년 연상의 연인과 결혼하나, 생활은 불안정했고 광산사 철도보안국 속기사 카우보이 세일즈맨을 전전 광고대리점에도 손을 대나 어느것도 길게 이어지지 못했다. 그 무렵 <사업을 성공하는 법>이라는 하우투 물의 고스트 작가가 된것이 문장을 쓰게된 동기가 되었다고 하나 사실여부는 확실치 않다.
아이가 생기고, 점점 생활이 힘들게 된 버로우즈는 1911년 35살때 처음으로 <화성의 달 아래서(Under The Moons of Mars)>라는 장편을 쓰고, 당시의 대중잡지 <올 스토리>지의 편집부에 보낸다. 이것이 운좋게 편집장의 눈에 들어 동지의 1912년 2월호부터 6회연재의 형태로 게재된다.
이 처녀작이 나중에 바슘 시리즈 11권의 제 1작으로, <화성의 공주Dejar Thoris,Princess of Mars)>로 개명된후 출판되었다. 처녀작의 호평에 힘을 얻은 버로우즈는 제 2작 <톤의 무법자>를 쓰나 출판사마다 거절을 당한다. 거기서 다시 정열을 쏟아부어 쓴 사실상의 2작 <유인원 타잔>은 작가로서의 성공을 결정짓는다. <타잔 시리즈>는 1944년까지 32년에 걸쳐 이어지고, 사후에도 출판된 작품을 합치면 버로우즈의 최대 최고의 인기 시리즈로 전 26 권에 달한다. 한편, <지저세계 시리즈> <금성 시리즈>등 비경, 이세계, 별세계를 무대로한 공상모험소설을 다수 발표, SF 분야에도 큰 영향을 준다. 장대한 스케일과 모험소설을 겸한 그의 작품군은 나중에 스페이스 오페라로 불리게된 SF 서브장르의 원형을 확립하고, 많은 모방자들을 배출하게 된다. 또, 버로우즈는 일반소설, 희곡, 미스테리도 썼으나 평가를 받는 것은 모험소설 역사소설 웨스턴 등의 오락성이 강한 분야이다.

타잔의 영화화의 대성공으로, 부를 얻은 버로우즈는 캘리포니아 산포르난도 계곡의 토지를 사들여 저택을 세우고, '란쵸 타자나'라고 이름붙여 살게된다. (나중에는 이 위대한 작가를 기려 정식으로 타자나로 명명된다.) 한편, 소설가로서의 성공은 가정생활의 붕괴를 가져왔고, 불행한 여성편력을 되풀이하게된다.
1933년. 12월 6일 버로우즈는 33년간 인생을 함께한 아내 에마와 이혼한다. 당시 타잔 영화의 스탭이었던 디어홀터의 아내, 프로렌스와의 불륜 때문이었다. 그리고 1935년 프로렌스와 정식으로 결혼하나 이 결혼도 6년을 버티지 못했다. 제 1차세계대전이 발발하자 육군소위로 참전한 후, 1939년부터는 하와이에 거주한다. 그리고 다시 제 2차세계대전에는 보도 파견원으로 종군한다. 전쟁이 끝나고 평화가 찾아온다. 종군기자로 마리아나 작전에 참가했던 버로우즈는 지병인 심장병이 악화되어 요양생활을 하게된다.. 1950년 3월 19일 월요일 '타자나'에 가까운 남 캘리포니아 에인시노 거리의 작은 집의 침대위에서 버로우즈는 숨을 거둔다. 방년 74세 조용한 죽음이었다.
