작가 소개

1904년 목사의 아들로 태어났다. 정규교육을 받지 못했으며 18세에 펜실베니아 철도공사의 노동자가 되었다. 과묵하고 신중했던 삶의 자세로 인해 현재 그의 생애에 대해서는 알려진 것이 많지 않다. 거의 모든 것을 독학했으며 과학과 역사에 조회가 깊었다. 경제적 곤란이 닥치자 친구와 가족에게 말하지 않음으로써, 부담이 되지 않는 해결책을 취했다. 1964년 11월 9일 펜실베이니아 윌리엄스포트의 자신의 아파트에서 권총으로 자살했다. 유언으로 다음과 같은 말을 남겼다. "이렇게 엉망진창으로 둔 채 떠나가고 싶지는 않다. 하지만 깨끗하게 정리할 수 있었다면, 지금 떠나가려 하지도 않았겠지. H. 빔 파이퍼."
